Reimagining Grocery Shopping

For many shoppers, stepping inside a grocery store is a thing of the past.

With multiple pickup and delivery options, there’s simply no need. But these grocery services come with their own challenges.

They’re expensive, inconvenient, and the produce selection leaves a lot to be desired.

There had to be a better way.

A team from Oklahoma didn’t just want to make grocery shopping a little better.

They reimagined the entire process.

From Idea To MVP

The team at JackBe envisioned a curbside grocery shopping experience that was quick, easy, and required no scheduling ahead of time.

Groceries could be ordered with an app and picked up whenever was most convenient. For busy households, this would turn errand time into family time.

They approached Reusser about bringing this idea to life. Simplicity for the end users required plenty of complexity for our developers. We collaborated with the team to clearly define what they wanted and what was most essential. Next, we built a minimum viable product (MVP) that served as a proof of concept. This allowed them to demo the MVP to solicit their first round of funding.

The Technology

We started with the mobile app. The blend of functionality, UX design, and branding created an intuitive experience that felt like JackBe. We also added unique features to increase the ease of use. Instead of having to search for each individual item, users have the option to paste their shopping list into what’s called a magic list. The system then finds those items and adds them to the cart.

In tandem with the app, we needed an order management system. Initially, JackBe wanted to utilize Shopify along with additional third-party platforms. However, through discovery, we realized this configuration did not allow them the flexibility to build exactly what their business needed.

We pivoted.

Reusser developed a custom order management system to replace Shopify and paired this new platform with several key tech partner integrations. This combination offered the enhanced capabilities and flexibility we needed.

Another key component was the integration of tech and hardware. To keep each JackBe location running smoothly, everything we built had to work seamlessly with components like printers, tickets, and digital signage.

Frequent Flyers

Before the first JackBe location opened, Team Reusser made the 800+ mile trip out to Oklahoma City multiple times. In addition to testing components in a live environment, these meetings provided valuable time with the client.

Digital Marketing

Team Reusser was also an integral part of building awareness. Through media buys and promotional emails, we spread the word about this new way of grocery shopping. But eyeballs alone weren’t enough. We encouraged action.

12,888 app downloads were generated during the first week of the initial store opening. Within the app store, this put JackBe ahead of national brands like T.J. Maxx and JCPenney.

Just The Beginning

JackBe is only getting started. There’s never been a startup quite like them in the grocery industry. With a few locations already opened and more planned, we look forward to continuing this ongoing partnership.
